Working hard for members – Research and Development Programme Update.

To take sustainability to the heart of our campuses, teaching, research and leadership, we need to think again to better help our members who are leading sustainability across their institutions.

The EAUC's new strategy is doing that and we want to update you on the new chapter of research and development which the new strategy has inspired.  EAUC is committed to helping our members get sustainability out of the silo it often is put and for this new approaches, language and alignment with institutional priorities and challenges is needed.

Read on for the first of a regular update on our research and development work to help you put sustainability at the heart of your institution.

Activity 1 - Sustainability Leadership Scorecard

EAUC is delighted to confirm that, due to funding from the former HEFCE, we are working with AUDE to further develop the Green Scorecard to cover sustainability issues beyond the estates function. The Green Scorecard will remain live and useable and the tool will be launched in May. We will be running webinars to support members on how to use the tool over the coming months as well as a workshop at the annual conference.

Activity 2 - Making the Business Case.

With support from senior sustainability leaders at 10 member institutions, this project is building a business case framework to enable members to build an evidenced and bespoke case to institutional leaders. The work, led by the University of Edinburgh, will be profiled at the June EAUC Conference.

Activity 5 - Next Stage for the Living Lab Programme.

NUS has been contracted to support the EAUC researching the next stage of support and funding for this agenda with huge potential for sector sustainability.  Central to the research will be the EAUC Living Lab Community of Practice. To join the CoP please email info@eauc.org.uk. Click here for a link to the EAUC Living Lab research papers.

Activity 6 - Sustainability Leadership Programme.

An alumni event is being planned on Next Generation Sustainability Leadership for the 19th June, which will pave the way for a new look Lab at Cambridge early 2019. Key elements of the programme will include Leading in Complexity, Strategic Planning for Sustainability and Innovation for Sustainability.  We are now taking expressions of interest for the 2019 Lab at info@eauc.org.uk

Activity 7 - Advocacy.

We have created an advocacy action plan and strategy which will be implemented over the next few months.

The key difference between the advocacy plan and that of the overarching strategy is that the advocacy plan seeks to influence a wider audience. This is beneficial to both us and our members. We want to help active members become advocates, we are advocating on their behalf to create a voice at a impactful level to raise the profile of sustainability within institutions.

We aim to continue to evolve the strategy throughout 2018.

Activity 8 - EAUC Future Business Council.

The EAUC – led Council is having its second formal meeting in May to review its initial two lines of enquiry, as well as planning a web space to capture and share the work of the Council. The two lines of enquiry are: 1. Graduate attributes –  developing a common understanding of what these need to be. 2. Governance and board membership - building a greater understanding of how universities operate.

Activity 9 - Review and Update of the EAUC Resilience Guide for Governors.

A panel of 14 University Boards and Vice Chancellors have responded to EAUC's call to review our Guide which was published 3 years ago. Led by the University of Edinburgh, Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability, this project benefits from formal input from Universities UK, Committee if University Chairs and the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education. Edition 2 of the Guide will be launched early summer this year. This guide aims to support members by getting sustainability recognised at the very highest level within your institution.
