Workshop Session Block 1

The first workshop block of the AUE 2024 Conference will take place between 14:45-15:30 on Thursday 5th September. See workshop details below:

Workshop Session 1A: Using the IoT/Smart Buildings to increase operational efficiency: Carbon, Cost & Compliance

Session Synopsis: Utilising real life data, we will demonstrate the operational efficiencies achievable through better monitoring and control along with usable and accessible data that can help reduce cost, manage carbon emissions, and increase compliance.

Workshop Session 1B: The Role of Performance Digital Twins in Achieving Net-Zero Campus Estates

Session Synopsis: Many universities have set in place ambitious targets to achieve net-zero carbon by as soon as 2030. However, understanding where decarbonisation measures should be implemented and prioritised, particularly when there is often a mix of new and historic buildings to consider across the campus estate, can present many challenges. Not least when there is also a need to optimise the educational environment to meet the needs of both students and staff, while keeping costs at a minimum.
This session will explore, through a selection of real case study examples, how performance digital twin technology is being utilised by a number of UK institutions, to support the decarbonisation of campus buildings. Sharing lessons learned to outline a holistic, data-driven approach which can encompass both short-term optimisation measures and longer-term decarbonisation investments to plan, implement and manage current and future operational performance at both a campus and individual building level.
Case study examples may include:

  • University of Glasgow – providing an update on the project last presented at AUE in 2022.
  • Heriot-Watt University – campus digital twin investigating energy, carbon and cost savings, encompassing a mix of both old and new buildings.
  • University of Liverpool – live operational dashboards for building performance optimisation.

Workshop Session 1C: Improving Sustainability on Campus through Connected Lighting

Session Synopsis:

  • What is the current lighting landscape, and what is the future of sustainable lighting? We will cover the latest LED technology, the drive towards smart lighting solutions, and how the phasing out of conventional light sources has impacted the market.
  • What is the impact of lighting on campus? We will cover the requirements, benefits, and cost of lighting on campus in terms of pounds, energy consumption and carbon production.
  • How can I choose a sustainable lighting manufacture? We will cover circular economy and the current certification available to sustainable lighting manufacturers that installers should be aware of.
  • Lighting as a platform – we will cover how connected lighting points can be used to monitor and collate data, as a means of improving sustainability, safety, and security on campus.
  • Connected Lighting – we will cover how connected lighting can enable the right amount of light, at the right time, in the right place improving sustainability across all applications.
  • Case Studies – we will demonstrate how connected lighting solutions have improved sustainability across lighting networks and installations.
